Head Coach at Thanh Hรณa FC (Vietnam) / 2022 – 2025
Velizar Popov ended his contract in early March 2025, leaving the team in third place ( Top 3 ) in the standings of Vietnam League 1 after only two defeats in 15 games and three historic trophies.
In December 1 2022 Velizar Popov was introduced as the new Head Coach of ฤรด๐ง๐ ร ๐๐ก๐๐ง๐ก ๐รณ๐ ๐ ๐ in Vietnam League 1. The team finished the season 2022 with 7 defeats in their last 10 games, which forced the club’s management to made a drastic change with the proven and successful manager in Asia in order to start the transformation of the club from average team mostly involved in relegation battles into an ambitious team challenging the big clubs in Vietnam. Despite the concerns of most of the media and fans whether the aggressive attacking style of Popov will be successful in a team that in recent years has been practicing a conservative and defensive style, Popov has categorically impressed all the doubts by making a significant change in the team since his first weeks of intensive training. Under the leadership of Velizar Popov the team makes a splash right in the middle of the season in the Vietnam League 1 recording their best start in the history of the club after 10 games played with 6 wins and 4 draws leading the top of the table league in 5 rounds in a row, achieving 3 games before the end of the regular season the main target of the club before the start of the season to enter in top 8. But most impressive for everyone is the incredible transformation into a pro-active attacking and aggressive team, always playing with a high aggressive pressing all over the pitch, dominated possession of the ball always building up from the back defensive line. Popov was elected from Vietnam League 1 coaches and team captains as the best coach of the month of April and also 5 times in the first 15 games as the best coach of the week rounds 4, 6, 7 , 9 and 15. Another notable achievement for the club was the calling of La Pham Thร nh Long, Lam Ti Phong, Hoang Thai Binh, and Nguyen Thai Son in Vietnam National Team after more than a decade without any call-ups. Under the guidance of Velizar Popov the team won the National Cup of Vietnam for the first time ever and the Vietnamese Super Cup as well, becoming the first and only manager in the club’s history with two trophies in one year 2023, also finished 2023 season at TOP 4 and reached another historic achievement for the club as the only one undefeated team in away games during the whole season.

Popov’s training methods were initially challenging for the Thanh Hoa team. However, his specific exercises helped transform the team’s performance. Despite losing nearly half of the squad and many key players like , Bruno Cunha,Paulo Conrado, the captain Minh Tung, Le Pham Thanh Long, Dzung, Le Than Binh, for the 2023โ2024 season, Popov led Thanh Hoa club to a strong performance and won one more National Cup for the second consecutive year, becoming the most successful team in the history of the club with 3 trophies from 5 possible competitions in 2 seasons. The squad that Popov took over in the Thanh Hoa football team is also far different from the stars that the other teams in Vietnam league used. But Velizar Popov has the enthusiasm of a coach who pursues modern football philosophies and thinking. Similarly, Thanh Hoa forces are also rich in energy, aspiration and discipline to create a sloppy collective under Popov. “We practiced with more intensity at the club than at the Vietnamese national team. Coach Velizar Popov always requires high levels of every step when practicing. All exercises take place on the mat, consecutively. Between exercises is only 2-3 minutes of rest. Velizar Popov was never satisfied. He promotes higher, higher intensity…”, midfielder Doan Ngoc Tan shared. Thanh Hoa has very few stars, but under the hands of Velizar Popov, there is an unpleasant team when winning the National Cup 2 times in a row and 1 National Super Cup. Previously, in the chronicles of Thanh football, there were not any titles in the traditional room. Velizar Popov often encourages players from Thanh Hoa : “Even if we don’t have the highest level of force, if we are brave and not afraid of anything, we can create a good spirit. Football is often a psychological battle. If we can sow fear in our opponents, even if they are judged to be better, we still have a chance to defeat”. During his time leading in Thanh, coach Popov contributed to forging and helping Thanh Hoa contribute to the national team of three players, Le Pham Thanh Long, Nguyen Thai Son and Doan Ngoc Tan. Nguyen Thai Son once impressed at the SEA Games when he ran an average of more than 13 km/match – a number enough to make experts compare with the frequency of movement of players in the Premier League. And Doan Ngoc Tan became the “person without lungs” of the Vietnamese team at ASEAN Cup 2024. No need for beauty, Doan Ngoc Tan simply digs the midfield with speed shots, not afraid of collisions and ball disputes with an extremely prolific physical background. Popov also discovered and established many young players between 18 and 20 years old from the academy’s youth team as Thai Son, Ngoc My, Ngoc Ha, Le Van Tuan, Nam , Phi Chau, Hoang Vo, Van Tung – and all of them have already contributed to the team’s successes and will be a major part of the team’s future. Velizar Popov ended his contract in early March 2025, leaving the team in third place ( Top 3 ) in the standings of Vietnam League 1 after only two defeats in 15 games and three historic trophies
Head Coach at Myanmar National Football Olympic Team U-23 / 2019 – Present
In January 2019 Velizar Popov has been appointed as a new Head Coach of Myanmar National Football Olympic Team U-23 for this year’s 2019 AFC Olympic Qualifiers , AFF Championship in Cambodia and SEA Games in Philippines. Still only 42 but with plenty of managerial experience under his belt already, Popovโs appointment was announced by Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) on Wednesday evening. The Bulgarian โ a UEFA Pro Licence holder โ is no stranger to the region, having had spells in Thailand with Suphanburi and Sisaket as well as in Malaysia with Kelantan. In fact, Popov has coached solely in Asia since 2012 with stints in Oman and Maldives as well, the latter of which involving being in charge of the national team in 2015. Myanmar are widely regarded as an emerging force in Southeast Asia but have seen their progress stagnate recently, highlighted by their group-stage exit at the last yearโs AFF Suzuki Cup following a semi-final appearance in 2016. The Under-23s also finished runners-up at the 2015 SEA Games, which was followed by a fourth-place finish two years later โ when the tournament was converted to an Under-22 competition. There is certainly no shortage of outstanding talent for Popov to work with, although inconsistency and indiscipline are often recognised as two factors preventing Myanmar from reaching the level of regional powerhouses Thailand and Vietnam. But, with six players from the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 squad eligible for this yearโs SEA Games โ Phone Thit Sar Min, Sann Sat Naing, Soe Moe Kyaw, Ye Yint Aung, Htet Phyo Wai and Lwin Moe Aung โ Popov will definitely have some youngsters with valuable experience to build his side around, along with fellow bright prospects Myat Kaung Khant and Hein Phyo Win.
NEW:
In the AFC Qualifiers Myanmar under Velizar Popov reached the most expressive and biggest win ever in the history of the U-23 National Team against Timor Leste 7-0. In the biggest South East Asian tournament Velizar Popovโs Myanmar have entered the semifinals of menโs football in SEA Games 2019 after impressive group stage campaign winning against the host Philippines 2-1, Timor Leste 3-1, Cambodia 2-1 and drawing with Malaysia 1-1,Myanmar made it 10 points from four group fixtures to enter the knockouts, they have left Cambodia, Philippines and Malaysia, all on four points with one matchday left, to fight it out for the one remaining last four slot available for Group A. Myanmar have claimed the menโs football bronze medal at SEA Games 2019 after beat Cambodia 5-4 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in the match for the 3rd place.
- In December 2020, the technical committee of the Myanmar Football Federation, after a thorough analysis of the team’s performance in the last two years, decided to propose a new contract to Popov.
The MFF Secretary General U Ko Ko Thein said that the agreement of his contract extension was reached till the end of 2021 SEA Games.
โWe are very pleased with the work of Mr Velizar Popov with the team so far and we reached an agreement last week to renew his contract. He agreed to extend the contract with the U23 Myanmar until the end of the 2021 SEA Games in Viet Nam. We are also planning to sign a contract with Mr Popov soon, โ U Ko Ko Thein said.
Velizar Popov confirmed the proposal of Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) to extend his contract for another year until the end of 2021.
โDelighted to have been offered and can confirm that I agreed to accept the proposal of the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) to extend my contract for another year until the end of 2021โ, said Popov.
โWe have already improved many things in technical, tactical, physical, and mental aspects during 2019, both collectively as a team and individually as the development of each player; in 2020 the pandemic has made it difficult and we couldnโt progress the way we wanted, but weโre excited about the future in 2021 and where we want to reach next year is a faraway, distant place right now, so weโll keep trying and moving forward in order to improve more and to achieve something bigger.
Thanks to the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) and Myanmar National League (MNL) Clubs, we will restart our preparation for all important tournaments in 2021 as SEA Games, AFC Qualifiers, and AFF Championship with Pre-Season Camp on January 10 until March 14.โ, the head coach added.
Velizar Popov is currently shaping Myanmar U-23 menโs national football team to have better movements.
In the AFC Qualifiers, Popov pushed team Myanmar to secure the biggest win ever in the history of the U-23 National Team against Timor Leste by 7-0. Remarkably, in the menโs football competition of the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, Popov assisted team Myanmar winning the bronze medal.
